Mistake # 6: Booking at a Bad Time

Making your travel plans at a bad time or until the last minute can lead to disastrous financial consequences. Hotel rates can skyrocket leading up to specific dates and you could end up without a reservation in your favorite hotel due to every affordable room being booked. Planning way ahead of time can also have its own disadvantages. For example, booking a room way too early can cost you a lot of money.

There’s no textbook answer to when you should make a reservation. Rates can fluctuate depending on the season, location, weather, events, etc. Keep an eye on the prices 40 days prior to your arrival date and if they begin to rise, book immediately.

Mistake # 7: Not Checking the Reviews

Hotels make it a point to go the extra mile to make their property seem like something out of a fantasy movie, but the reality can be quite different. These days, it’s pretty common to have paid reviews aimed at attracting the most customers.

After you’ve shortlisted a number of hotels, carry out a bit of detective work and research reviews. Try to read as many as possible. Go for the recent ones and be wary of those that offer excessive praise or criticism. It’s always smart to reserve a room in well-known hotels to eliminate the risks of having a bad travel experience.

Mistake # 8: Not Comparing Different Hotels

Often travelers see discounted offers and immediately type in their credit card numbers without thinking twice. No matter how great an offer may seem, always compare it to other hotels in the same town or city – you could be missing out on massive savings.

As a rule of thumb, always go through at least three different websites, especially those that have to option to view multiple hotel prices at once. Remember, you may have located a good offer, but there’s every chance of a greater one you could have availed had you done more research.

Mistake # 9: Going for Non-Refundable Rooms

Sure, the non-refundable rooms come at a lower price, but there’s a reason for that. Hotels want to safeguard their money by preventing customers from backing out in case of an emergency. Going for refundable rates is always the safer choice. After all, you never know which unexpected event could prop up tomorrow forcing you to cancel your reservation and if you have already booked a non-refundable room, be ready to cough up some serious money.

Mistake # 10: Not taking into Account the Taxes and Hotel Fees

It’s not uncommon to hear hotel rooms charging visitors outrageous additional fees. At times, these won’t be clearly outlined and forms may include statements such as “additional fees may apply”. Make it a point to ask the hotel which fees are included in your package.

While you may be able to cancel the newspaper or housekeeping fees, other charges like taxes and resort fees are unavoidable and something you’ll have to take into account while budgeting.
